Five years ago, a new venue opened in Toulouse with a seemingly simple idea: inviting guests to enjoy dinner without seeing what is on their plates. 

Since September 2021, Dans le Noir ? Toulouse has welcomed guests at FirstName Toulouse, on Allées Jean-Jaurès. Since then, thousands of people have walked through the restaurant's doors to discover a different way of enjoying a meal, relying not on sight but on their other senses. 

To celebrate five years of Dans le Noir ? Toulouse, let's look back on an adventure that is both human and sensory. Over the years, menus have evolved, experiences have diversified and, above all, encounters have continued to give meaning to the concept. 

At Dans le Noir ?, the experience begins when the lights go out. 

Seated in total darkness, guests discover a surprise menu whose dishes are only revealed after the meal. Without visual cues, they are encouraged to focus differently on what they eat: flavours, textures, temperatures and aromas, as well as the sounds and conversations around the table. 

This sensory experience encourages guests to pay closer attention to every bite. A familiar ingredient can seem entirely new, an unexpected combination can be surprising, and a texture can become a valuable clue. 

For five years, this rediscovery of taste has been at the heart of the experience offered in Toulouse. The menu changes with the seasons, but the intention remains the same: to offer a dining experience that is unlike any other. 

Although Dans le Noir ? Toulouse is often described as an unusual restaurant, the experience goes far beyond simply eating in the dark.

Throughout the meal, guests are accompanied by the restaurant's visually impaired guide-waiters, who welcome them, show them to their seats and guide them through the darkness. Their presence allows guests to enjoy the experience with confidence and peace of mind. 

Darkness also changes the usual dynamics around the table. Faces disappear, appearances fade away and conversations take on a different role. Interactions often become more spontaneous, leaving more room for sensations and human connections. 

This is also why, five years after opening, Dans le Noir ? Toulouse continues to attract a wide range of guests: regular customers, Toulouse residents, visitors, couples, families, groups of friends and businesses looking for a different kind of event. 

An anniversary is always an opportunity to look back. For Dans le Noir ? Toulouse, these five years have above all been a story of encounters. 

There are the guests discovering the concept for the first time, those returning years later to relive the experience, those giving a dinner to someone special and those choosing the restaurant to celebrate a special occasion. 

Every table also brings its own reactions: guesses about what is on the plate, conversations about identifying flavours, bursts of laughter and moments of surprise when the menu is finally revealed. 

These moments are at the heart of the restaurant's story and remind us that every meal is a unique experience. 

To mark its fifth anniversary, Dans le Noir ? Toulouse organised an evening bringing together around thirty guests from the media, influencer community, tourism sector and local Toulouse scene. It was an occasion centred on discovery, conviviality and, of course, the sensory experience. 

Guests began arriving at around 6:30 p.m. before gathering on the first floor of FirstName Toulouse. This initial welcome gave everyone the opportunity to meet one another and discover another aspect of the concept with Benjamin, one of the restaurant’s guides, who invited participants to write their first names in Braille. This fun, hands-on introduction offered an insight into another writing system while highlighting the essential role of visually impaired people in the Dans le Noir ? experience. 

The evening continued with speeches by Gaëlle Desperier, Director of FirstName Toulouse, followed by Marc Siblini, Manager of Dans le Noir ? Toulouse. It was an opportunity to look back on the journey that began in 2021, celebrate how far the restaurant had come and thank those who help bring it to life. 

At around 7:30 p.m., the guests entered the dining room plunged into darkness to experience the concept for themselves. During the meal, familiar reference points gave way to sensations, the discovery of flavours and conversations around the table. It was a different way of introducing the concept to those who help promote Toulouse’s venues and local initiatives. 

Among the organisations represented were several local media outlets and radio stations, including RTL2, Fun Radio, Toulouse FM and NRJ, as well as Toulouscope and Toulouse by Night Fever. Representatives from Toulouse City Hall, the Toulouse Team tourist office and professionals from the communications and influencer sectors were also present, including Agence 610. 

After approximately an hour and a half, the guests emerged from the dining room at around 9 p.m. The evening continued with a debrief, giving everyone the opportunity to share their impressions and discuss their reactions to this unusual dining experience. 

Beyond celebrating five years, the evening was above all an opportunity to introduce or reintroduce the Dans le Noir ? Toulouse experience to local figures who help raise the city’s profile. This anniversary perfectly illustrates the importance of connection and sharing in the restaurant’s story.

Over the past five years, Dans le Noir ? Toulouse has evolved its offering to provide new ways to enjoy the sensory experience. Among these new additions, two options allow guests to personalise their meal even further: the Birthday Package and the non-alcoholic pairing.

Thec sensory experiene extends beyond food to include drinks. With its non-alcoholic pairing, Dans le Noir ? Toulouse invites guests to discover new flavour combinations through three alcohol-free creations designed to complement the different courses of the meal. 

This pairing offers another way to explore flavours and discover how drinks and dishes complement one another. In the darkness, aromas, textures and sensations on the palate take on a new dimension, encouraging guests to pay closer attention to every tasting. 

By extending the sensory experience beyond the plate, this offering enhances the meal and invites guests to discover sometimes unexpected flavour combinations.
